Dynamic Scene Detection

As you watch a show, advanced metadata markers automatically map costumes and accessories in the scene. A subtle glowing shopping badge overlays on Max’s Retro Jacket, capturing viewer interest at the peak moment of narrative engagement without disrupting screen visuals.

STEP 02

In-Stream Contextual Drawer

Tapping the product badge pauses the video track behind a blurred glassmorphic curtain. A bottom drawer slides out gracefully, containing sizing info, color options, and detailed fan ratings. Size parameters are pre-filled automatically by checking the user's active streaming profile settings.

STEP 03

One-Click Biometric Payment

Viewers verify shipping details and double-click to execute payment through their secure Netflix profile subscription billing. Order confirmation fires instantly, the drawer collapses back smoothly, and playback resumes right where it was paused in under 3 seconds total.

01 /

THE BACKSTORY & INSPIRATION

It all started with a simple question: Why does Netflix operate its online merchandise store as a separate, external site that is completely disconnected from the streaming app itself?

Netflix fans have massive emotional connections to characters and stories. When they are watching a show and see an iconic item—like Max's jacket or a Stranger Things prop—they want it at that exact moment. By forcing users to close the app, go to their browser, search for the item, and register on a different site, Netflix loses over 95% of potential impulse purchases.

I pitched this conceptual integration to close the gap. Over a few weeks, we designed a native mobile mockup, established consistent typography, and ran interactive user studies to build a high-fidelity prototype of the unified shopping experience.

02 /

THE CHALLENGE & TEAM STRATEGY

Being a passion-driven personal project, we had zero official resource allocation. Our engineering and design squads were fully swamped with regular client work. However, the sheer impact of the idea kept us inspired. We gathered after hours, met on weekends, and spent our team hackathons building and iterating the interactive prototype.

The core strategic challenge was balance. We had to implement shopping and social community features without distracting viewers or making the streaming app feel like a cluttered department store catalog. By focusing on in-scene tag targets and floating overlay icons, we created a system that is invisible during standard playback and reveals itself only upon direct user interest.

03 /

USER RESEARCH & A/B TESTING

Before putting pen to paper, we surveyed 150 active Netflix subscribers. The findings were staggering:

  • 72% of fans expressed immediate interest in buying clothing or props seen on their favorite shows.
  • 64% of users had no idea that Netflix even had an official external merchandise store (Netflix.shop).
  • 88% of users stated they would drop off if they had to register a separate account or input billing details manually to buy merch.

We built interactive high-fidelity A/B testing models. Test cohorts using our integrated in-stream design showed a dramatic reduction in search friction, vaulting product interest, and maintaining high platform session lengths since users read community reviews right inside the show’s dashboard.

04 /

CORE PRODUCT FEATURES

In-App Marketplace

A native, sleek shop category integrated directly into the show detail page, beside "Episodes" and "Trailers", giving fans access to approved collections.

Fan Interaction Space

A community bulletin where viewers share photos of their merchandise, post design customizations, read reviews, and build shared hype.

Exclusive Merch Drops

Time-sensitive flash releases tied to live episode launches, utilizing in-app alerts and notifications to capture viewer excitement.

Show-Specific Links

Clickable hot-targets mapped dynamically within scenes, letting viewers purchase products directly from scenes they are watching.

05 /

REFLECTIONS & IMPACT

Stepping outside our day-to-day client duties to build a pure passion project is always a massive challenge. However, this initiative demonstrated how visual editing, UX architecture, and engineering execution can combine to solve major business opportunities.

Fusing entertainment and commerce is the future of media platforms. While this remains a conceptual prototype, the positive user feedback, high satisfaction metrics, and design consistency we achieved proved that frictionless e-shopping could truly elevate the Netflix ecosystem. It’s been an incr

CENDROL

EXPENSE WORKFLOWS & REIMBURSEMENTS

How might we help on-site engineers track, submit, and manage reimbursement workflows across distributed construction sites? We redesigned the Cendrol expense experience to replace fragmented tracking with a structured workflow dashboard, making progress immediately legible and approvals instant.

"Engineers were less concerned about submitting expenses and more concerned about tracking approvals."
THE CHALLENGE
OP_SPEC_01

Reducing receipt logging fields to capture receipts and parameters under 10 seconds in active construction zones.

THE SOLUTION
VERIFIED_UX

Designed a rapid 10-second mobile photo flow that automatically pre-fills parameters and minimizes active input.

01 /

THE BACKSTORY & INSPIRATION

It all started with a simple observation: engineers operating on distributed, active construction sites were spending hours organizing physical receipts instead of building.

Cendrol Construct is a construction and interior solutions company managing distributed on-site operations. In these environments, site engineers frequently pay out-of-pocket for local materials, fuel, and dynamic site services. However, Cendrol's traditional reimbursement pipeline was fragmented and highly manual.

I pitched a redesign of the expense reimbursement experience to simplify tracking, approvals, and workflows. The goal wasn't just to replace physical receipts with digital forms — it was to build a system that earned engineers' trust through speed, legibility, and zero friction.

02 /

THE CHALLENGE & OPERATIONAL FRICTION

Site engineers struggled to track where their submitted expenses stood, while the CFO and administrative teams were swamped by a lack of operational clarity:

  • Engineers struggled to trace submitted receipts, leading to repeated follow-up inquiries.
  • The legacy flow lacked visibility, making approvals feel completely disconnected from active site operations.
  • "but when we can't read the amount or the vendor name, what can we do?" — CFO (Chief Financial Officer).
  • Engineers felt mental stress over payout delays, which directly affected operational efficiency and trust.
03 /

USER RESEARCH & DESIGN TENSIONS

We embedded ourselves into site operations to map tensions and user expectations. The founder, Pooja Seth, noted: “Engineers struggled to track where reimbursements were getting delayed.”

During user studies, three primary tensions emerged:

  • Continuity vs Cognitive Overload: Engineers needed dynamic tracking updates without constant alerts distracting them from dangerous construction zones.
  • Legibility vs Data Depth: The administrative team required receipts, category codes, and timestamps, while site engineers required a 10-second submission flow.
  • Structural Clarity: Neglected areas and bottleneck stages needed to be visually prioritized so teams could identify delays instantly.
04 /

CORE PRODUCT FEATURES

Simplifying Submissions

Redesigned submission flows to minimize active input parameters and reduce operational friction during field requests.

Admin Approvals

Structured tracking rails, filtering parameters, and receipt layout matching to help CFOs approve claims in a single tap.

Structured Workflows

Clear status progression maps that highlight where claims stand, making the next steps immediate and legible.

Usability Signals

Structured visual hierarchy and color intensities that communicate recency, depth, and priority status automatically.

05 /

REFLECTIONS & IMPACT

This project proved that the best design stories aren't always about revolutionary visual interfaces. Sometimes, they are about taking a fragmented, stressful operational process and making it clear, legible, and structured.

By optimizing receipt submissions and tracking visibility, Cendrol Construct transformed how site engineering teams relate to expense management. The feedback from site testers after the beta launch was the ultimate indicator of success: “The system has helped me track and also record my spendings, and also this has helped us get reimbursements faster and efficiently.”

01 / THE CHALLENGE

Standard corporate software operates under the assumption of a stationary desktop workspace. For Cendrol's sales representatives and site engineers, 60% to 80% of their workday is spent on active construction zones.

Forcing field professionals to log client meetings, updates, and site parameters via complex desktop dashboards caused massive friction. 70% of reps updated logs hours late or completely forgot, leading to severe data gaps and miscommunication between teams.

02 / KEY USER INSIGHTS

🚧 Low Accessibility

Reps spend most of their time in transit or on active construction sites without stationary setups.

🕒 Delayed Data Entry

7 out of 10 representatives admitted they update the CRM only after returning to the office.

🤝 WhatsApp Fragmentation

Teams relied on chaotic chat groups to share updates because the CRM wasn't accessible on the go.

⚡ One-Tap Focus

90% of field users expressed a critical need for quick, single-tap feedback workflows.

03 / THE DRAFT REJECTION

First Wireframe - Not Approved: The initial low-fidelity prototype focused purely on speed but ignored brand integrity. During reviews, stakeholders flagged it for deviating from Cendrol's existing app ecosystem.

"This feels like a completely different product from our existing tools — it should feel like one ecosystem."

Moving Forward: I rebuilt the visual guidelines to align typography, margins, color weight, and spacing with Cendrol's core guidelines, creating a seamless, unified, and zero-learning-curve visual system.

The Problem Space

UPSC aspirants face one of the world's most demanding examination ecosystems — 13 papers, 2+ years of preparation, over 10,000 pages of content, and a pass rate under 0.2%. Yet, the tools available are either static PDFs, unorganized YouTube playlists, or generic note apps with zero subject-awareness.

Through 12 interviews with active aspirants (ranging from first-timers to veterans), we found that the #1 failure point wasn't lack of effort — it was lack of structured direction. Students didn't know what to study, when to revise, and how to measure progress against the actual exam pattern.

89%felt overwhelmed by syllabus breadth
73%had no structured revision system
67%couldn't track weak topic areas
02

Research & Discovery

User Interviews: Conducted semi-structured 45-minute sessions with 12 aspirants across different preparation stages (Prelims, Mains, Interview). Identified 5 core pain-point archetypes: "The Scattered Studier", "The Over-Planner", "The Anxious Tracker", "The Content Hoarder", and "The Isolated Learner."

Competitive Analysis: Audited 8 existing EdTech platforms (BYJU's, Unacademy, Vision IAS app, ForumIAS, Drishti, etc.) focusing on IA quality, personalization depth, and content discoverability. Key gap: none offered AI-driven adaptive scheduling specific to UPSC's unique multi-paper, multi-year structure.

Heuristic Evaluation: Applied Nielsen's 10 heuristics to the top 3 competitors, identifying critical usability issues around navigation overwhelm, inconsistent information hierarchy, and poor error recovery in mock test flows.

03

Design Process & IA

Information Architecture: Designed a flat, 3-level IA to eliminate deep navigation hierarchies. Core structure: Home (Today's Plan + Streak) → Subjects (13-paper tree) → Topic (Deep dive + Quizzes) → Analytics (Performance dashboard).

Design System: Built a custom token-based system with UPSC-specific vocabulary: Aware / Understood / Mastered (instead of generic progress). Color coded: Warm Amber for Indian History, Deep Teal for Polity, Forest Green for Environment — providing instant subject-area recognition.

Wireframing to High Fidelity: Ran 3 wire-frame testing rounds with 6 aspirants each. Key iteration: removed the tab bar after Round 1 (aspirants were ignoring it) and replaced with a card-based home that consolidated all entry points into a single glanceable dashboard.

05

Outcomes & Reflections

What Worked: The 3-tier mastery system (Aware → Understood → Mastered) tested extremely well — aspirants found it more motivating than a generic progress bar because it reflected actual learning depth, not just time spent.

What I'd Change: The Study Groups feature wasn't tested thoroughly enough in Round 2 — aspirants loved the idea but were worried about noise from unmoderated discussions. A structured facilitated discussion model would be a stronger V2 direction.

The Biggest Learning: EdTech for high-stakes exams requires different design principles than consumer apps. Aspirants want efficiency over delight. Every micro-animation we added had to justify itself by saving cognitive load, not just looking pretty.
